Housing company Coasts & Country has announced it will invest £1.5 million in making 72 homes energy efficient, using energy saving bulbs.
Better insulation, new roof coverings and low energy bulbs in communal areas are being installed in three blocks of flats in Middlesbrough. Solar panels are also being installed to provide the elevators with power.
"We are committed to ensuring all our properties are energy efficient and fit for future generations," commented Anthony Brown, the company's director of property & assets.
"Our sustainability strategy underpins our commitment to shaping a greener future and provide better homes for our tenants," he added.
Mr Brown anticipated that residents will see their service charge "significantly fall" due to the upgrades being implemented.
Earlier this week, US developer Jamestown announced that it had seen "phenomenal" savings following a near-£250,000 upgrade to smilight fittings and LED lamps in its New York City office block.
