How to Properly Dispose of Electrical Equipment

Whether your electrical equipment is broken or simply being updated, it’s important that it is safely disposed of. Unfortunately, this waste cannot just be put out with your domestic collection, so in this article we’ll look at how to safely dispose of it.

Does it still work?

If the appliance or equipment can still be used effectively but simply isn’t needed anymore, consider giving it or selling it to someone who can make better use of it!

Facebook marketplace is a great place to quickly and easily get rid of unwanted items.

Local scrap man

Most people up and down the country will be familiar with the call of the local scrap man. A great way to get rid of unwanted appliances is to either leave it out on days that you know he collects, or find a way to get in touch with someone locally to arrange a special collection.

Recycle it

While almost all appliances should be able to be recycled, your local council may have specific restrictions on how and where you can do this, depending on what the waste is.

Check your local council’s website for what you can recycle curb side or what needs to be taken to your local household recycling centre.

Why is it important to properly dispose of waste?

It’s estimated that 1 million tonnes of Waste from Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) is sent to landfill each year. Much of this waste is made from components that can be reused, therefore reducing the need to mine for these materials.
