Top Tips for Tool Maintenance

The importance of your tools shouldn’t be overlooked. Without them, so many tasks and trades wouldn’t be possible. So, as we’re coming in to the quieter season, it’s important to take some time to make sure you’re looking after your tools properly.

Cleaning tips

It’s important to clean any dirt, dust or debris from your tools every time you use them. However, if you’ve fallen behind, take the time to do this now.

If you notice any rust, be sure to use a rust remover to treat it.

Inspect any handles for splinters or cracks that may cause it to break while in use. A splinter can be simply sanded away, but a crack will need replacing.

Check hammer heads for any mushroom splays which may cause your hammer to shatter.

Caring tips

Keep any moving parts in top working order by making sure they are properly lubricated. Double check the manual to see if the manufacturer has any recommendations for how to do this, but regular machine oil should do the trick.

Check the condition of any batteries, making sure you fully charge and discharge them once every couple of weeks. Don’t leave them unused for too long. If you’re not going to use a battery or charger for a while, make sure it is stored in a cool, dry place and consider cleaning the contacts with a cotton bud and alcohol.

Sharpening tips

If you let drill bits or blades go blunt, you’ll have an expensive tool that doesn’t perform the way you want it to.

Once the tool is clean, you can quickly sharpen it using a blade sharpener or grinder. Then, once you’re happy, apply a thin coat of oil.

Replace broken parts

Some parts of your tools simply aren’t worth trying to fix or maintain. If a belt, brush, cable, or switch is broken, it will need to be replaced.

Storage tips

If you leave your tools out in your van or shed, dust and damp can easily get to them. While tools by nature are designed to be sturdy, they’re not indestructible.

A proper toolbox or storge unit will be better suited to keeping your tools in tip top condition. It will keep them safe from the elements while making it easier to find things that you need.
